On the occasion of the World Cystic Fibrosis Day, Commálaga publishes an informative video reviewing neonatal screening and the new treatments for this genetic disease.

The Colegio de Médicos de Málaga (Commálaga) has released an informative video on cystic fibrosis on the occasion of the World Day of this disease, which is commemorated on 8 de septiembre. The piece is part of the campaign «Tu salud, nuestro compromiso», which the institution releases every month coinciding with health-related events.
The video features the pediatrician Estela Pérez and the gynecologist Laura Baños, mother of a child with cystic fibrosis, who provide the professional and family perspective on this genetic disease, which mainly affects the lungs and the digestive system.
One of the advances highlighted is neonatal screening, known as the heel prick test, which allows the disease to be detected from the first days of life and treatment to begin before symptoms appear, as Dr. Pérez explains in the video.
Dr. Baños recounts her experience as a mother and stresses that daily treatments, diet, physical exercise and infection prevention are part of the routine of affected families. «Como madre de un niño con fibrosis quística, he aprendido que cada detalle y pequeño cuidado cuenta», she states.
According to the statement sent by Commálaga, the new treatments are changing the course of the disease and allowing greater hope and quality of life for many patients. Baños describes that change with a personal comparison: «Cuando diagnosticaron a mi hijo, el futuro daba mucho miedo. Hoy, ese miedo ha dejado paso a la esperanza».
Despite these advances, Dr. Pérez points out that it is still necessary to continue researching so that all people with cystic fibrosis can benefit from the new treatments.
